The biggest tip we can give and we say this all the time “Act like you like each other!” although this is playful its actually a very powerful way to establish the mood. Through our process of getting to know our couples before our first engagement session we get a better understanding of their level of playfulness, romance, if they’re comfortable in front of the camera and to understand their level of public displays of affection. Knowing all this makes the experience so much more enjoyable.

What does it look like to act like you like each other? ENGAGE EACH OTHER! Engaging to us look like embracing, warm hugs, touching, holding hands, snuggling up to each other, looking at each others lips, kissing, tender moments and laughing.

Posing ideas are endless. Here are a few examples.

Touch bodies, lean on each other, hold hands naturally, go in for a smooch on the cheek and tell her how much you love her. This brings out genuine smiles in the brides face. Shoot these both close up and wide for different looks.

Walking shots look best when you walk slow, hold hands with your bodies far enough apart to create a “V”. We love it when our grooms lead the way ever so slightly. Having the couple talk to each other about how beautiful the day is brings out very charming smiles and expressions. The best way to shoot this shot is notice the grooms legs, the leg closest to the camera should cross in front of the back leg. This creates a more romantic look and eliminates the the look of him dragging her around.

If you do forehead touching it’s best to look at each others lips, or close your eyes. Looking directly into each others eyes can look awkward in photographs.

We like to call this one the “Kitchen kiss”. The direction we give on this one is for the groom to come up behind he bride as if she was preparing a healthy snack in the kitchen and he was overwhelmed with love and had to give her a hug and a kiss from behind. This shot is very easy to pull off.

Whether you’re dancers or not, dance away! These shots can look amazing if done right.

We here at Valen strongly encourage you to do an engagement session for 3 reasons.

  1. You get beautiful photographs
  2. You get to know your photographer better
  3. You get comfortable with posing

Steve, the owner of Valen Studios has taught thousands of photographers across the world and through that experience he has gathered that the less experienced the photographer, the less they know about posing , the less you are going to like the outcome of your images. It’s vital that you are comfortable working with the company you choose to photograph your wedding. It will always be about how comfortable you are with your photographer, the experience they have in posing, how artistic their vision is and lastly, do they fit your budget.

The moment right before the kiss is so powerful. Feel that energy!

Gentlemen, be tender as she feels safe and secure.

Of course you should kiss once in a while, but don’t do it in every picture.

Have fun and be silly, laughing and giggling shots look extremely genuine and loving.
